Zweitausendeins. Good books and movies, best music.
Zweitausendeins, the cult mail-order company, was founded in the wild 1960s. For some, it was the “junk shop of counterculture” (Taz), while for others, it was the “trendsetter for the cool intellect” (Der Spiegel). The offerings include good books, films, music (Bob Dylan!), and beautiful things, all marketed to cultivated individuals across Germany via catalog and online shop.
In 1974, Zweitausendeins launched its first catalog, the “Merkheft,” which quickly became a cult catalog, offering incredibly inexpensive book overstock and soon after, CDs and films. Even today, Zweitausendeins searches for bargain editions from publishers and music labels around the world and also produces many titles in-house.
Since the 1970s, Zweitausendeins has undergone many changes, yet it still reliably presents a similarly wild and sophisticated mix of topics each month—educational, ecological, demanding, entertaining, funny, and cheeky. A loyal customer base of regulars has been supporting it for decades with purchases via catalog or online shop.
